FERTIGATION
Fertigation is a modern agro-technique which provides an excellent opportunity to maximize yield and reduce environmental pollution by increasing fertilizer use efficiency, minimizing fertiliser application and increasing return on fertiliser invested. It is the application of fertilizers through drip irrigation systems. Different water soluble fertilizers, micro nutrients and secondary plant nutrients can be applied through fertigation.
Benefits of fertigation
1. Nutrients can be applied as per plant
requirement uniformly.
2. Acidic water soluble fertilizers help in
cleaning the drip system.
3. Nutrient losses can be minimized with
proper application dose.
4. Time ,labour and energy can be saved.
5. Fertigation suitable for both sandy and clay
soils.
6. Increase in crop yield by 20-30% and reduce in
cost on fertilizer use.
Different Water Soluble Fertilizers for fertigation
Fertigation Equipments
Fertigation ca be done
by
1. Venturi injector
2. Fertilizer tank
3. Fertigation pump
Precautions in fertigation.
- The type of fertilizer for fertigation should be of high quality, with high solubility and purity, containing low salt levels and with an acceptable PH.
- Make sure that the fertilizers used are compatible to prevent precipitation. Especially avoid mixing fertilizer solutions that contain calcium with solutions containing phosphates or sulphates.
- use separate tanks for fertilizers that interact and cause precipitation. Example: in one tank Calcium, Magnesium and micronutrients and in another tank Phosphorus and Sulphate compounds results in safe fertigation.
- Check the solubility and potential precipitation with local water. Before using new fertilizer, mix some fertilizer with one liter of irrigation water and observe for precipitation within 1-2 hours. If precipitates are formed avoid using that fertilizer.
- Fertilizers used should have minimum or no clogging to fitters and emitters.
- It should have a low corrosive property for the fertigation system.
- Do not apply fertilizers in combination with pesticides.
- Avoid over irrigation as it causes leaching out the nutrients.
- Daily or alternate day fertigation is recommended.
- Use inline drippers instead of micro tubes for fertigation.
Foliar Spray (Spray on
leaves)
Foliar spray is the
method of applying fertilizers in solution form directly on plant leaves.
Recommendation
- 2-3
sprays in a 15-20 days interval, after a good vegetative growth of the
plant.
- Mostly
spray in 40-50 days after sowing and 60-70 days after sowing.
- 1-2
kg required for one acre area for one time spray.
- Recommended
dose of water soluble fertilisers for foliar spray is 8-10 gm/liter of
water.
